From the public sector to management consulting: Dr. Henrik Basche (Consultant)
Henrik joined the consulting industry as a career changer. He previously worked in various roles in the public sector, focusing on cross-border mobility and health economics. At 3con, he now deals with operational excellence issues for a global corporation and supports SMEs in sustainability management. The challenge of delving into complex problems and a completely new industry appeals to him. No wonder – as a fan of Energie Cottbus, he is used to be passionate about niche topics.
“At 3con, we rely on hidden champions – namely career changers with atypical consulting CVs who bring new perspectives to the team.”
Before I joined 3con, after a few instructive years in the public sector, I felt the need to try something new and get to know “the economy”. As an economic geographer with a doctorate and perhaps an intellectual background, I had hardly had any contact with industry in a practical sense.
That’s why I was curious about how companies work. Where can you get a more multifaceted insight than in a management consultancy?
Interdisciplinarity makes us strong
Because I perceived a career change as a certain risk at the time, it was important for me to choose my future employer carefully. I got to know and appreciate 3con as a management consultancy with a special profile. The entire team comes from a wide variety of disciplines and most of my colleagues do not have a traditional consulting background. This makes the collaboration exciting and diverse. Comprehensive and individualized onboarding also ensured that I was able to get off to a successful start.
The chemistry is right
At 3con, we mainly advise companies in the chemical and process industry. This is an industry that I hadn’t had any particular contact with before, but which I became quite enthusiastic about immediately after starting at 3con. The chemical industry in particular is the mother of all industries, so to speak, because it supplies the basic materials for countless products that we use every day – from cosmetics and medicines to textiles. In any case, I find it totally fascinating to familiarize myself more and more with the industry and have obviously discovered a new passion.
Private and professional life coexist on an equal footing
Family-friendliness was also an important factor in my decision to join 3con. I have a young son and since my wife is also a full-time trainee teacher, I would probably have had to take a break at many other management consultancies. Instead, at 3con I benefit from a flexible working model with the option of working from home and a reasonable workload for the consulting industry.
The balance between career and days at the client’s premises on the one hand and family and private life on the other is ideal for me.
Bye-bye boredom
What I like most about my work at 3con, apart from the respectful cooperation, is the diversity of the projects. Fortunately, it never gets boring. I would like to say to all people from outside the field who are interested in the consulting industry: just give it a try! You have nothing to lose – especially if you see the application process as a learning process. Specialist consultancies and hidden champions like 3con in particular offer good framework conditions for taking a new turn on your own career path.
